Just thought I'd add this to make things clearer, both got a 2000 stack and it is the first few hands of the tournament.

I think I make him pay on the Turn too given that there is a chance of a suckout... If he's got the AJ, well not much you can do...I don't think it's set over set 'cos I would have expected a re raise pre flop. Depending on the player, he is possibly doing this with KQ.. it's a call from me, but AJ won't be a surprise.

Viffer gets the gold star - it was AJ.
Figured the only hand he could have that beats me was AJ hence calling the raise. KK and QQ I ruled out as would think he'd reraise me pre and J9 ruled out because I assumed he wasn't a donk.
Was checking the turn to try and reraise him, guess I was lucky he checked.
Wrote it on here to see what others thought as the villain and somebody else at the table claimed it was poor poker on my behalf, didn't think it was personally. Just one of those hands you're gona lose chips on I guess...

I don't wanna give free cards to hands like KJ, QJ, TJ. I would bet the turn and go broke...

I would have bet at least pot on the turn. Probably 1000. I have found early in a mtt no one will fold a decent pair or pair and straight draw or anything decent. If he has you beat so be it. I'm not worrying about that 40bb deep.
Also I would have bet almost pot on flop.

Agree, I hadn't noticed the bet size on the flop... this is not a board to be slow playing. He likely caught something from a draw to 2 pair and he is likely going to pay you on every street. So he had the nuts, well it happens, but more often it doesn't and this is an opportunity to get some value out of your set.
